Diana Kennedy headlines food portion of Texas Book Festival

Diana Kennedy is returning to Austin this fall as the unofficial food headliner of the Texas Book Festival, which will take place Oct. 26 and 27 at and around the Capitol.

At 90, the esteemed cookbook author is still stirring up the culinary world, most recently at the MAD Symposium in Copenhagen, where she dismissed sous-vide cooking and chefs who are only sustainable for purposes of marketing. Her 1998 classic, “My Mexico,” is being reissued this fall, and she’ll talk about the new edition, as well as her 50-plus year career in exploring, documenting and demystifying the cuisine of Mexico, specifically Oaxaca and Michoacán, where she lives.

Other cookbook authors coming to the festival this year include Joe Yonan for his new book, “Eat Your Vegetables: Bold Recipes for the Single Cook,” Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Brent Ridge, authors of “The Beekman 1802 Heirloom Cookbook,” blogger-writer Daniel Vaughn (“The Prophets of Smoked Meat”) and chef Tim Byres (“Smoke) of Dallas, and the prolific Robb Walsh of Houston.

New York writer and sometimes bartender Rosie Schaap will talk about her memoir, “Drinking with Men,” and Austin authors who are participating include Lucinda Hutson (“Viva Tequila!”), Mando Rayo and Jarod Neece (“Austin Breakfast Tacos”), David Alan (“Tipsy Texan”) and the “Austin Beer: Capital City History on Tap” authors. I will be there talking about “The Austin Food Blogger Alliance Cookbook,” a community cookbook that came out earlier this year.
