Having a little fun with sweet, savory holiday balls

Inspired in part by the iconic “Saturday Night Live” sketch with Alec Baldwin, Molly Shannon and Ana Gasteyer, we decided to have a little fun today with all the spherical holiday treats that come out this time of year.

Cheese balls, meatballs and bonbons/truffles all get their time in the inky spotlight today, including a lox cheese ball (above) that is one of my favorite recipes in the package, but one recipe that didn’t make it into the section were these sausage balls, a homely spin on meatballs that you either remember fondly from your childhood or will dismiss as the craziest thing you’ve ever heard of since Little Smokies served in a grape jelly barbecue sauce.

Cheesy Sausage Balls

1 lb. ground sausage

3 cups baking mix, such as Bisquick

4 cups grated sharp Cheddar cheese

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Using your hands, mix all the ingredients together in a large bowl. Don’t overmix. Roll between your hands to make 1-inch balls. Place on a baking sheet that has been coated with a cookie spray or lined with foil. Bake for 18 to 20 minutes or until golden brown. Makes 4 to 5 dozen balls.

What are your favorite holiday ball recipes? I didn’t make any boozy balls for this year’s story, but maybe we’ll cover those next year, so I’d love to gather a few reader recipes…
