Film chronicles history, love of Buffalo chicken wings

Ready to whet your appetite for Sunday’s big game? A new documentary about one of the definitely football foods is now available on several video-on-demand services, including iTunes, Amazon Instant Video and, starting Thursday, Hulu.

The Great Chicken Wing Hunt” celebrates the 50th anniversary of the spicy appetizer famously invented in a kitchen in a bar in Buffalo, N.Y. The original recipe was just two basic ingredients: Frank’s RedHot sauce and melted butter, a simple combination that inspired a worldwide frenzy.

Americans will eat more than a billion chicken wings this weekend, but few people love them as much as the “wing enthusiasts” chronicled in this documentary from director Matt Reynolds. Over the course of the movie, they eat chicken wings at more than 70 establishments — including the wings’ birthplace, where they interview the last-living witness of the wings’ creation — to try to determine who makes the greatest wing of all.
