Events: ‘History Around the Table’ at the French Legation

“The Jemima Code” author Toni Tipton-Martin and culinary historian Michael Twitty are the featured speakers at a free event, “History Around the Table: African American Cooks and Our Culinary History” from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday at the French Legation Museum, 802 San Marcos St. Both Tipton-Martin and Twitty will talk about their studies in African-American foodways, and the lectures will be followed by a pie social. At 3 p.m. Sunday, the French Legation is hosting a pig roast featuring heirloom Southern recipes from Twitty. From 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, In.gredients, 2610 Manor Road, is hosting a Chinese New Year tea ceremony with Slow Food Austin and Sohan Fan of the West China Tea Company. The event is free, and you can RSVP at slowfoodaustin.org.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, the Travis County Expo Center Banquet Hall (7311 Decker Lane) will host the Austin Gluten & Allergen Free Wellness Event, a day of cooking demonstrations, product sampling and educational classes featuring speakers including Jennifer Fugo of Gluten Free School and Pam Jordan from the blog, I’m a Celiac.
