Drive-thru meat market returns Saturday

Buying in bulk is often touted as a way to save money on groceries, but that doesn’t usually mean buying 40 pounds of chicken or ground beef at a time.

But that’s the idea behind Zaycon Foods, a Spokane, Wash.-based company that sells large quantities of meat at more than 1,400 drive-thru pickup locations across the country, including three sites in Central Texas.

Customers place orders online and then drive to the designated pickup site — usually a large parking lot — on a certain day, where they pick up their order straight off the truck. Zaycon has delivered to Austin for several years, and on Saturday, they’ll host a “beef event” featuring 40 pound-units of lean ground beef. The 93/7 beef costs $3.99 a pound, and customers cannot order in smaller quantities, but that doesn’t mean you couldn’t go in on a purchase with a friend or neighbor and divide up the meat when you get home.

The next chicken sale isn’t until October, and you can browse other products and pricing (the boneless, skinless chicken breasts cost $1.89 a pound) at

Customers can place their orders until Thursday night for pickup Saturday at one of three Austin-area locations: River Road Baptist Church, 12712 FM 969, First United Methodist Church, 1004 N. Mays St. in Round Rock, and Victory Baptist Church, 1775 E. Whitestone Blvd. in Cedar Park.
