Austin tech company crowdsources holiday charity choice

In this season of giving, it’s not always easy to figure out what charity you should devote your time and energy to; one Austin company is crowdsourcing the answer.

Spredfast, the social media marketing company that merged with Mass Relevance earlier this year, is allowing people to vote from five charities it could support this holiday season. Using the hashtag #BeNiceAndSocial, Twitter users can try to influence the vote, which includes Boys & Girls Club of the Austin Area, Girlstart, Austin Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels and More, and Urban Roots. Voting is at spredfast.com/beniceandsocial.

The winner of the vote will receive a cash donation and a day of service from members of the Spredfast team, about 200-250 people. It’s unclear exactly what the stakes are, financially speaking; the company won’t disclose what cash amount it plans to donate to the winner of the contest because Spredfast is a private company and doesn’t disclose its financials. So don’t expect to see a group photo of people holding a giant check with a dollar amount on it anytime soon.

The charities that lose the vote will not receive a consolation prize, but Spredfast says they’ll benefit from the social media exposure.

Currently, Boys & Girls Club is leading far ahead with 55 percent of the vote.
