“Canopy Tower,” by John Grade is on view at the Contemporary Austin-Laguna Gloria.

Friday-Thursday

“John Grade: Canopy Tower.” The newest addition to the Betty and Edward Marcus Sculpture Park at Laguna Gloria, comes from Seattle-based artist John Grade. For the site-specific “Canopy Tower,” Grade, an avid backcountry hiker and mountaineer, selected a forested area off the well-traveled and manicured paths of the Laguna grounds, taking inspiration from the wind that blows off Lake Austin. Nearly 16 feet tall and made of Ipe wood, the conical shaped “Canopy Tower” hangs from three trees and is just high enough for a viewer to duck inside, its round opening framing an unexpected view of the sky and tree canopy. Like much of Grade’s environmentally based work, ” Canopy Tower” is expected to evolve or even degrade over the course of the long-term installation as it is exposed to the weather and environment. Laguna Gloria grounds hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. Contemporary Austin — Laguna Gloria, 3809 W. 35th St. 512-458-8191. www.thecontemporaryaustin.org
