Jeep has come a long way. Originally used for light duty government and military purposes, this enduring American icon now moves road warriors and their civilian gear all around the nation.

The 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee retains some of the silhouette of the brand, but this midsize SUV goes far beyond basic function. The space inside the Jeep goes on for miles, with room to seat five people comfortably and cargo space for everything from groceries to a load of band gear.

I fully enjoyed the versatility of the Jeep Grand Cherokee I took for an extended spin this month. The fold-down center in the second row made it easy to adjust from two to three kids, depending on the errand. Up, three fit with plenty of leg room. With the middle seat folded down, two kids had space for their snacks and gaming gear to keep everyone happy.

That gear was easy to keep charged with the readily accessible USB and charger ports in the back of the driver’s center console. Cords stayed put, not interfering with the driver or front passenger like they do in some other makes. Making inside accessories easy to get to and use for everyone in the Jeep means a smoother trip for everyone!

And smooth is how I would describe the ride in this model. From the easy glide of the automatic transmission to the strong yet subtle eight-speed V6 engine, taking the Jeep Grand Cherokee around town was a dream. Turning was tight but controlled, with the Jeep hugging the road like a sedan, thanks to its unibody chassis. The remarkable transmission setup made for great fuel economy, getting about 25 mpg, which is amazing for such a large vehicle.

The cargo area was amazing, fitting a big stock-up load of groceries easily, with hooks on either side of the Jeep to keep bags from rolling around. There is enough space in the back to haul some small furniture and musical instruments, even with a full load of passengers up front. The versatility for a family SUV was incredible.

There’s a reason the Jeep Grand Cherokee has been attracting attention and racking up awards: It’s a stylish, flexible and well-priced SUV that stays true to the functionality of its beginnings while opening up the possibilities of today.
