The Contemporary Austin’s Music for Wilderness Lake

8:15 p.m. Friday, 6:30 a.m. Saturday. Free. Laguna Gloria, 3809 W. 35th St. www.thecontemporaryaustin.com.

You’ve probably been to plenty of outdoor concerts before, but how about ones where the conductor is giving musical cues from a canoe? In the Contemporary Austin’s “Music for Wilderness Lake” production, a 1979 work of environmental music by Canadian composer and sound theorist R. Murry Schaefer, 12 trombonists will play meditative music while stationed around the Laguna Gloria lagoon at dusk and dawn — two very specific times that Schaefer’s piece calls for. The dispersed trombonists may not be able to see each other, but the conductor on the water, in a canoe designed by local woodworker Aldo Valdes Bohm, will use flags to help them keep time. Ice cream vendors Teo Gelato will be on-site at the evening performance; coffee will be given out for Saturday’s early risers.
