Sponsored: Help Crime Stoppers fight crime

Jodi N. Gonzalez

When it comes to solving crimes, the best resource for law enforcement can be the eyes and ears of the community. That's where Capital Area Crime Stoppers comes in.

Since 1979, Crime Stoppers has taken more than 19,000 anonymous tips that led to more than 8,000 arrests, solved more than 11,000 crimes and recovered more than $33 million in stolen property and illegal narcotics, as well as confiscated 200 firearms.

The nonprofit group can't do it alone, however. This community service tool needs donations from individuals and corporations to operate their program, pay cash rewards to citizens who provide crime-solving tips and provide their award-winning Campus Crime Stoppers program to all Travis County campuses. And now Crime Stoppers is asking for your help. Through Sunday, June 29, you can go to austincrimestoppers.org to donate, investing in your neighborhood and helping fight crime in the community.

All tips to Crime Stoppers are anonymous and can sent in by web, text or phone. Go to austincrimestoppers.org, text "tip103 + your message to 274637 (CRIMES) or call 512-472- TIPS (8477) or 1-800-893-TIPS (8477). Go to www.austincrimestoppers.org to learn more about how the program works and to see how tips have helped solve crimes in our area. Also, KVUE will be featuring packages on Crime Stoppers during its 10 p.m. newscasts on June 26, June 27 and June 28.

Some recent successes made May a record-breaking month for the program. Tips led to 20 arrests, including people suspected of bank robbery, sexual assault, habitual identity thieves and home burglars.

The crime you help stop might be one that hits close to home. Donate today.
