'Bachelor,' 'Biggest Loser' among returning reality shows

Some of the biggest-name reality shows aren't dilly-dallying about getting back to work after the holidays. "The Bachelor" and "The Biggest Loser" both return this week, with "American Idol" (covered in Dale Roe's column today)and "Project Runway" following next week. The returning series and new offerings span all of the classic reality genres, from the "Rich People With No Filters" docudramas to the "Where Do They Find These People?" dating competitions.

Returning shows

  • Jan. 4: "The Bachelor: On the Wings of Love," 7 p.m., ABC. Dallas' Jake Pavelka, who clashed with Austin's Wes Hayden on the last season of "The Bachelorette," looks for love.
  • Jan. 5: "The Biggest Loser: Couples," Eleven family teams compete, including the show's heaviest-ever contestant (526 pounds). 7 p.m., NBC.
  • Jan. 6: "Man vs. Wild," 8 p.m., Discovery. This season, Bear will be everywhere from Montana to China.
  • Jan. 7: "Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew," 9 p.m., VH1. Season 3 sounds especially sad and sordid, with celebrity patients including Mackenzie Phillips and Mindy McCready.
  • Jan. 14: "Project Runway," 9 p.m., Lifetime. After a season in L.A., the show's seventh installment returns to New York. Spinoff "Models of the Runway" returns for its second season at 10.
  • Feb. 3: "Shear Genius," 10 p.m., Bravo. Giacomo Forbes, a stylist at Bella Salon & Day Spa in Austin, is one of the contestants. Model Camila Alves (who's also the girlfriend of No. 1 Longhorns fan Matthew McConaughey) takes over as host.

More returning shows: "Shark Tank," 8 p.m. Friday , ABC; "Little Miss Perfect," 9 p.m. Jan. 12, WE TV; "The Singing Bee," 8 p.m. Jan. 15, CMT; "The Millionaire Matchmaker," 9 p.m. Jan. 19, Bravo; "Kitchen Nightmares," 8 p.m. Jan. 29, Fox; "Celebrity Apprentice," 8 p.m. March 14, NBC.

New shows

  • Jan. 3: "Frank the Entertainer \u2026 in a Basement Affair," 7 p.m., VH1. The network is at it again with the dating shows. This one stars a former "I Love New York" suitor who still lives with his parents.
  • Jan. 3: "Secrets of Aspen," 9 p.m., VH1. Six women try to "find love, pay the rent and stay friends" in the resort city.
  • Jan. 5: "Wild Recon," 8 p.m., Animal Planet. Follow a venom expert who travels the world working with dangerous animals.
  • Jan. 8: "Operation Wild," 9 p.m., Planet Green. Like "Cops," but with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission.
  • Jan. 11: "Fantasia for Real," 9 p.m., VH1. "American Idol's" Season 3 winner, Fantasia Barrino, balances single motherhood with recording a new album.
  • Jan. 13: "Our Little Genius," 8 p.m., Fox. Actor Kevin Pollak hosts this game show featuring super-smart kids. It's from producer Mark Burnett ("Survivor"). After tonight, the show moves to its regular time slot of 8 p.m. Tuesdays.
  • Jan. 16: "Pit Boss," 9 p.m., Animal Planet. Four little people in L.A. work to rescue and rehab pit bulls.
  • Jan. 18: "The Buried Life," 9 p.m., MTV. Four guys cross experiences off their "things to do before I die" list, and help strangers live their dreams.
  • March 14: "The Marriage Ref," 7 p.m., NBC. Celebrities advise couples. Creator/executive producer Jerry Seinfeld promises it's more about comedy than therapy.
  • March 15: "Basketball Wives," time TBA, VH1. The wives and girlfriends of players like Shaquille O'Neal and Eric Williams let cameras peek into their lives.
