Quench your thirst for literature

Emma Janzen

"Beer and literature go way back," said Craig Popelars, Algonquin Books' marketing director. "Even Ernest Hemingway appeared in Ballantine Beer ads. You can Google that if you don't believe us."

Algonquin Books and Lagunitas Brewing Co. teamed up this summer to bring bookworms and beer nerds together, creating a refreshing series that Hemingway himself would no doubt approve of: the Free Beer Tour, a coast-to-coast series of evenings celebrating literary minds and crafty suds.

After hitting Milwaukee, Oakland, Naperville and Brookline, the tour makes its last stop in Austin tonight at 7 at BookPeople, 603 N. Lamar Blvd.

Popelars explained the idea behind the tour: "Algonquin prides itself on handcrafting books in small batches that are refreshingly intoxicating. Sort of like, well, you know, a well-brewed beer. Beer? Wait, what if we blend our great books with a great beer and put them on the road together? Seriously, then they can't download that kind of experience on their Kindle, right?"

Authors Josh Wilker ("Cardboard Gods: An All-American Tale"), David Anthony ("Something for Nothing") and Pete Nelson ("I Thought You Were Dead") will be present to throw back a Pale Ale or two with attendees and discuss their books.

Guests can participate in the Free Beer Quiz. The person with the highest score will win $100 worth of Algonquin books and a six-pack of Lagunitas.
