Now East Austin is getting its very own location of the hip Houndstooth Coffee — and it’ll offer something neither of the other two area coffee shops have with a full liquor license.
That means the new Houndstooth, opening this fall on East Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., will offer beer, wine and cocktails in addition to its usual menu of caffeinated beverages.
The Congress Avenue location has coffee only (including nonalcoholic coffee and tea cocktails); the North Lamar Boulevard cafe has beer and wine in addition to coffee. A coffee shop bolstering a menu of hard booze is uncommon but not unheard of — the 24-hour Buzz Mill off Riverside Drive has house liquor infusions, for example. Beer at coffee shops is far more common.
Other than the liquor license, not much else will vary from the other two local Houndstooth spots. Expect a modern, airy interior from the Dallas-based architecture and design studio Official, with plenty of seating centered around a large U-shaped counter. The cafe will also have a small patio outside.
With this location near the light rail line, Houndstooth is hoping to capture both the happy hour and late-night crowds, staying open until 11 p.m. on weekdays and midnight on weekends.
Houndstooth will be at 2823 E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Ste. 101, as part of the mixed-use development called Platform.
