Melania Trump wears ‘I really don’t care. Do u?’ jacket ahead of border trip

Update, 4:58 p.m.: Melania Trump also wore her now-infamous jacket after returning from her visit to the Texas border.

The Dallas Morning News’ Washington bureau chief, Todd J. Gillman, tweeted Thursday afternoon that Trump sported the jacket reading "I really don't care. Do u?" as she returned to Andrews Air Force Base from McAllen.

Getty Images released photos where the words on the back of the jacket can be seen more clearly.

JOINT BASE ANDREWS, MD - JUNE 21: U.S. first lady Melania Trump (C) climbs back into her motorcade after traveling to Texas to visit facilities that house and care for children taken from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border June 21, 2018 at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland. The first lady is traveling to Texas to see first hand the condition and treatment that children taken from their families at the border were receiving from the federal government. Following public outcry and criticism from members of his own party, President Donald Trump signed an executive order Wednesday to stop the separation of migrant children from their families, a practice the administration employed to deter illegal immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border. President Donald Trump also weighed in on Twitter.

“‘I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO U?’ written on the back of Melania’s jacket, refers to the Fake News Media. Melania has learned how dishonest they are, and she truly no longer cares!” the president tweeted.

Earlier: U.S. first lady Melania Trump made an unannounced visit Thursday to a Texas facility housing migrant children who have been separated from their parents at the Mexican border. An article of clothing she wore at the beginning of her trip caused a social media firestorm soon after.

“FLOTUS spox confirms Mrs. Trump wore a jacket to visit border kids that reads: ‘I really don't care. Do you?’” CNN chief White House correspondent Jim Acosta tweeted. “Spox says: ‘It's a jacket. There was no hidden message. After today's important visit to Texas, I hope the media isn't going to choose to focus on her wardrobe.’”

Trump’s wardrobe choice comes after a week of intense scrutiny of the family separation policy of her husband, President Donald Trump. The policy took some 2,300 children from the parents when they were detained illegally crossing the U.S. border. On Wednesday, the president reversed his previous positions and signed an executive order halting his administration's policy.

According to a caption for an Associated Press photo where the words on the back of the first lady’s jacket are partially visible, she was wearing the jacket when she arrived to board a plane at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland to travel to the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas.

According to the Daily Mail, which first reported the story, the jacket was at one point available for sale at the clothing retailer Zara.

The jacket caused a swirl of reaction on social media.
