“Dear Hate” was written three years ago. But it turned out to be the perfect expression of the country music community in the wake of Sunday night’s mass shooting in Las Vegas at the Route 91 Harvest festival.
The song, written by Morris, Tom Douglas and David Hodges and featuring Vince Gill on vocals, was released on YouTube and distributed through a tweet from Morris Monday.
“I wrote this song 3 years ago, recorded it last year with Vince Gill, and always have fans asking when I’ll put it out,” Morris wrote in a note accompanying the tweet. “I never knew when would be the right time, but I realized today that there’s never a right time.”
The acoustic song, addressed to Hate, references the Bloody Sunday riots in Selma, the Kennedy assasination and 9/11, and ends with Morris and Gill duetting: “Love’s gonna conquer all.”
Morris tweeted her shock about the shooting and her support for the victims early Monday morning:
After the song was released on YouTube, Morris planned to add it to iTunes Friday, with all proceeds going toward the Music City Cares Fund. Due to popular demand, the song was added Tuesday.
