Hundreds of residents living near the Colorado River in La Grange, about 60 miles southeast of Austin, had to evacuate before floodwater entered their homes over the weekend. On Monday, the river -- where flood stage is 26 feet -- crested at 54 feet, its highest level in more than 100 years.

In La Grange, a small city where farming and ranching is a large part of residents’ livelihoods, the concern wasn’t just about human lives, but also livestock and other animals.

Jacob Zatopek, a resident of nearby Fayetteville, shared photos and video on Facebook as he helped bring cattle to higher ground.

“Well we got every single last cow out by airboat plus some neighbors. Crazy day! Hope we never see this again,” Zatopek wrote on Facebook.
