On Friday, Austin lost one of its most hilarious voices. John Kelso, the American-Statesman’s longtime humor columnist, died from complications after a recent fall. He was 73.

Kelso started writing his columns in 1977. He retired in 2011, but he did not let a little thing like that stop him from punching up the pages of the Statesman with his everyman wit. His last Statesman column was published July 2.

What with being a fixture in the lives of readers across Austin for four decades, Kelso’s fans are legion. Here’s a sample of the condolences and memories shared on social media Friday.

See photos of Kelso through the years (including some really great black-and-white shots). Read his last column for the Statesman, which ran in the July 2 edition. Sign the guest book for Kelso, too.
