Gone Country: Watch Miranda Lambert and Wade Bowen perform a George Strait song in New Braunfels

A big highlight of seeing artists live (at least, for me, anyway) is getting to hear cover songs. Some incorporate covers throughout their whole show, while others reserve them for the encore only.  But it’s always fun to see how, say, Jason Isbell interprets the Allman Brothers, or how Margo Price performs a Doug Sahm song.

While I wasn’t in the crowd at Whitewater Amphitheater in New Braunfels last Saturday, one front-row fan was, and managed to get some video of Texas artists Miranda Lambert and Wade Bowen performing a George Strait classic.

Bowen and Lambert harmonized on an acoustic version of “A Fire I Can’t Put Out,” which was Strait’s second No. 1 hit of his career. Bowen, who opened for Lambert on both nights of her stand at New Braunfels, led with the guitar on the cover song.

According to Statesman web producer Maribel Molina (who was at Lambert’s Friday performance), Bowen made a joke Friday about when he first met Lambert: “I remember Miranda and her dad used to come to my shows a long time ago, and she asked me once, ‘When I get big, will you open shows for me?’ And I was just like, ‘Yeah, sure, OK, 16-year-old.’”

Judging by their Strait performance, the two sound great live, even on a cell phone video. Maybe Bowen could record a duets album with Lambert, like he’s done with his pal Randy Rogers?
