Happy Earth Day, ATX!

While Austin’s largest Earth Day event will actually take place next Saturday, April 27 (and we have details on that below), there are plenty of ways to give back to Mother Nature on a weekday, too. Read on for our top picks.

Boogie down at the Earth Day Street Fair Celebration

Native Hostel
4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. (after-party from 9:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m.)

Venture to East Sixth Street for the Earth Day block party hosted by Native Hostel. With musical performances and art installations, this is probably the most party-time Earth Day option you’ll find today. A $5 suggested donation at the door goes to benefit the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM).

Attend Mother Earth Day picnic, protest at the Texas State Capitol

Texas State Capitol
10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Join Climate Strike TX for #TurnoutForTexas, a Mother Earth Day picnic and advocacy event in support of legislation to combat climate change. Wear green, pack a picnic lunch and meet some new faces working to create positive change in the community.

Join the UT Earth Day Flash Rebellion

UT Main Building
12:45 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Join Extinction Rebellion Austin this afternoon on the University of Texas campus for a flash mob protest of climate change. Bring a sign and wear green.

Go “plogging” with the Austin Runners Club

Ready to Run (3616 Far West Boulevard)
6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Here’s a way to get your workout in while contributing to a good cause. “Plogging” is a Swedish fitness trend that combines jogging with picking up litter -- the term comes from the Swedish phrase “plocka upp,” meaning to pick up. Join the Austin Runners Club for this feel-good evening activity and bring your A-game: the top three runners to pick up the most trash win a prize. All pace groups are welcome.

Clean up Town Lake with Rogue Running

Rogue Running (410 Pressler Street)
6:00 p.m.

If you’d rather stick around the downtown area, go “plogging” with the Rogue Running group along a three-mile stretch of the Town Lake trail. Trash bags and gloves will be provided and participants will receive a 20% off coupon good at both Texas Running Company and Rogue Running. All pace groups are welcome.

Spend your Saturday at Earth Day ATX

Huston-Tillotson University
12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
**Saturday, April 27

From panels on the Green New Deal to sustainable cooking demos, a rock climbing wall and musical performers, Austin’s official Earth Day celebration has something for everyone next Saturday. The event is free and open to the public, so why not bike, walk or scooter by?

Enjoy Earth Day at the Bastrop Community Gardens

Bastrop Community Gardens
11:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.
**Saturday, April 27

Earth Day is as good an excuse as any to venture out to Bastrop. Check out the beautiful community gardens and enjoy Earth Day festivities like yoga classes, an indigenous dance performance by Danza Azteca Taxcayoloti and local Austin musicians. Eco-friendly vendors will be on site to display their wares and offer educational workshops.
