Mark Harmon, mainly known for his role on CBS's "NCIS," has optioned the rights to "Honor Thy Father," a June 1998 feature article from Texas Monthly, Deadline reports.

The feature by Skip Hollandsworth tells the true-crime story of Lance Butterfield, a "gifted" young football player, and his abusive father Bill. Lance Butterfield shot his father on Dec. 27, 1995 in their home in the suburbs of Fort Worth, Texas.

Harmon's Wings Productions optioned the rights along with producer Eric Tannenbaum and the Tannenbaum Company, according to Deadline.

Hollandsworth, a longtime writer and executive editor at Texas Monthly, also co-wrote the film "Bernie" with Richard Linklater. The film was based on another 1998 Texas Monthly article of Hollandsworth's, "Midnight in the Garden of East Texas."
