A home just isn’t the same without a pet. For some Hurricane Maria survivors who left Puerto Rico, the long wait to see their furry friend’s face again is over.
The Austin Humane Society facilitated reunions on Saturday for several pets and owners who had moved to the mainland. At least a dozen dogs, cats and a rabbit made the flight from the island to Austin.
The animal shelter has helped respond to natural disaster events before, taking in animals during Hurricane Harvey and the Hidden Pines wildfire. According to social media posts, this was the staff’s second mission in Puerto Rico.
Hurricane Maria caused intense destruction across Puerto Rico and killed at least 65 people on the island in 2017.
