Food is bound to come up at a festival about flourishing. Voice & Exit, the “daylong event aimed at innovation, well-being and community building” at Austin Music Hall on Saturday, will feature two speakers with ties to the Paleo movement: John Durant, author of the bestselling “The Paleo Manifesto,” and Dave Asprey, better known as “the butter coffee guy” who runs a website called “The Bulletproof Executive.” Tickets ($35 for a partial pass, $99 for a day pass, $155 for VIP upgrade) and full lineup at voiceandexit.com.
Thanks to a push from eco-minded entrepreneurs who see a future in alternative proteins, bug-eating is bigger than ever, and so is the 7th annual Bug Eating Festival, which will take place this year at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Rock Garden Picnic area in the middle of Zilker Park’s Great Lawn. Organizers Marjory Wildcraft, Allen Davisson and the local entomophagy nonprofit Little Herds will cook bugs and share lots of education (and war stories) about why eating insects is so common elsewhere in the world. (There is also a potluck of “normal” food to which attendees may contribute.) The event costs $5 per adult if you register online at growyourowngroceries.org or $7 at the door. (Kids younger than 12 are free.) You can find more information on how to bring bugs (and what kind) on the website.
Arianna Auber has a comprehensive list of this month’s wine, beer and spirit events over on her blog, Liquid Austin, and Matthew Odam rounds up a few restaurant-centric events, including the Austin Food Blogger Alliance’s Big Chill fundraiser for Meals on Wheels and More. (Disclosure: I’m on the AFBA board.)
