The fires in Australia show no sign of slowing down, and there’s a sense of helplessness as the rest of the world watches.
The environmental disaster has inspired Austin Bakes to organize its 10th citywide bake sale fundraiser. The bakers who manage the group started in 2011 after the tsunami in Japan and have raised more than $85,000 for various disasters, from Hurricane Harvey and the fires in Bastrop to the earthquake in Nepal.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, you’ll find adorably packaged cookies, cake balls, muffins, snack mixes and, yes, cupcakes at more than half a dozen locations across Central Texas. This year’s Austin venues are Crema Bakery and Cafe and Confituras Little Kitchen in South Austin, Bennu Coffee and Cuvee Coffee in East Austin, Lustre Pearl downtown, Stiles Switch BBQ and Brew, Make It Sweet and Dream Bakery in North Austin, and Nate’s in Buda. (The Lustre Pearl and Stiles Switch locations don’t open until 11 a.m.)
The group is always looking for bakers to contribute and sites to host the bake sales. All of the proceeds will go to Global Giving Australian Wildfire Relief Fund, which distributes money to numerous organizations in the country.
