A bakery just opened in Round Rock that smells a little bit like San Francisco.


When Dave and Meriann Sanford moved to the Austin area in 2018, they brought with them a wild yeast starter they’d kept alive for more than a decade.


During that time, they got really good at baking San Francisco-style sourdough loaves, a specialty product that can be hard to find outside the Bay Area.


The Sanfords started Sanford Sourdough Bakery to sell those loaves at Austin-area farmers markets about a year ago, and this week, the couple opened a brick-and-mortar bakery at 1025 Sendero Springs Drive in Round Rock, where they are hosting a grand opening party from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday.


Customers can find four styles — rye, honey wheat, classic and country — in several different shapes, and the bakery also sells several toasts that you can eat in the store.


The store is open from 3 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays and 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sundays, and the Sanfords will continue to sell at the Mueller and Lakeline farmers markets, as well as the SFC market downtown and the Wolf Ranch Farmers Market in Georgetown.
