Original East Austin mural artist given ‘blessing’ by wall owner to paint replacement

The original artist of a large mural at 12th and Chicon streets that was painted over earlier this month has been asked by the building’s owner to repaint the original, according to a post on Houston artist Chris Rogers’ Facebook.

According to the post, Rogers spoke with the owner of the store Veronica Ortuno who gave “her word and blessing to repaint the wall.” Rogers also mentioned that what the mural will depict would be discussed at meetings scheduled for Wednesday morning and Thursday afternoon.

Many people voiced concern after the mural, which depicted famous black musicians like Michael Jackson and Tupac, was painted over with white paint earlier in May. The neighborhood surrounding the cross streets has been affected by gentrification for years.
