Where does Aaron Franklin go for Texas barbecue?

Where do you go for Texas barbecue when you are Texas barbecue?

Central Texas smoked meat star Aaron Franklin recently revealed to Eater exactly where in the state he’d go for barbecue. While there aren’t a lot of surprises among his picks, if you’re looking for a new way to tour the state’s meat offerings Franklin suggests the following 3-day trip:

Kreuz Market

619 N. Colorado St., Lockhart

Smitty’s Market

208 S. Commerce St., Lockhart

City Market

633 E. Davis St., Luling

This is a familiar trio to Central Texas barbecue connoisseurs. Franklin suggests the sausage at all three and, hold on tight, the cheese and crackers at City Market.

The what?

Snow’s BBQ

516 S. Main St., Lexington

Louie Mueller Barbecue

206 W. 2nd St., Taylor

Snow’s BBQ was recently named Texas Monthly’s No. 1 spot for barbecue in the state, beating out only Franklin’s own joint. It’s no wonder Franklin suggests Louie Mueller, as Mueller scion John was the one who taught “an unknown kid with a smoke-filled dream” the ropes.

Valentina’s Tex Mex BBQ

11500 Manchaca Road, Austin

Franklin Barbecue

900 E. 11th St., Austin

4200 N. Lamar Blvd., Austin

What’s the point of being arguably the best pitmaster in Texas, if not the country, if you can’t recommend your own work? Franklin suggests the tacos at Valentina’s, and clearly couldn’t resist throwing in a non-barbecue favorite with Austin’s famed Uchiko.

Correction: An earlier version of this article said that Louie Muller taught Aaron Franklin about barbecue. It was Louie’s grandson, John.
