As spotted by the San Antonio Express-News, a video posted to Facebook last week by NowThisFood asks, “Will eating cactus become the hottest food trend of 2018?”
Nopales, or prickly pear cactus, is a popular ingredient in Mexican cuisine and has been for centuries. It can be eaten raw or cooked. The taste of nopales is sometimes likened to green beans.

While the video does mention that “cactus is already a super popular food in Latin America,” and doesn’t call the dish “new,” viewers have reason to be wary of the nopales’ labeling as a “trend.” As with quinoa’s growth in popularity years back, which became what the Guardian called “a cautionary tale of how a focus on exporting premium foods can damage the producer country's food security,” a spike in a food’s demand isn’t always good news.
