For the first time ever, the Texas Craft Brewers Festival has expanded to an additional night — a smaller, more intimate beer tasting that showcases the close-knit camaraderie of the state’s beer makers.
Partners in Craft, to be held on Sept. 29, the night before the big fest, will have beers you can sample that were all produced in collaboration with another maker, whether a local farm, coffee roaster, winery or even a stoner rock tribute band. The Texas Craft Brewers Guild, the organization behind the festival each year, decided to highlight these collaborations because they’re so integral to the beer industry.
“We have been interested for some time in adding an additional VIP experience to the festival, while also celebrating the core values of Texas craft beer: collaboration and community,” Charles Vallhonrat, director of the guild, said. “Partners In Craft promises to be the perfect combination of intimate setting, local food and music, and craft beers that highlight how Texas craft breweries work with their communities and each other.”
In addition to the beer list — featuring brews that, for the most part, you won’t be able to try at the festival — Partners in Craft will have live music, local artisans curated by the Austin Flea and local food vendors that include LeRoy and Lewis’ barbecue and upcoming restaurant and brewery the Brewer’s Table.
But let’s be honest, you’re likely going for the beer. The $55 Partners in Craft tickets get you a commemorative taster glass and 8 sample tickets for 3 oz. pours; although you can purchase more pours, you’ll still need to decide ahead of time which brews to seek out. Here’s the beer list.
- (512) Coco Cerise. It’s the (512) Pecan Porter infused with coconut, cherries and vanilla. Collaborator: Dolce Neve Gelato
- Adelbert’s Cherry Sour. Expect lots of barrel funk with gentle fruit notes. Collaborator: Sprayed Expressions
- Austin Beerworks Saccharification. The tart saison was fermented with a rare Belgian yeast strain. Collaborator: Art of the Brew (an event that returns Sept. 2, by the way)
- Big Bend Brewing Dark Sky Double Chocolate Porter. Collaborator: SRSLY Chocolate
- Blue Owl Brewing Saison Puede Harvest 2017. The farmhouse ale was soured in red wine barrels and refermented with newly harvested red grapes. Collaborator: Infinite Monkey Theorem Winery
- Circle Brewing Archetype Historical IPA. The homage to the world’s original India Pale Ales was made with a recreated malt. Collaborator: Leander’s Blacklands Malt
Community Beer Co. Vanilla Ascension Coffee Porter. Collaborator: Ascension Coffee Roasters
- Freetail Brewing Texas Harvest. The Belgian wheat beer was refermented with Tannat grape must and aged in Charbono wine barrels with Brettanomyces and Pediococcus. Collaborator: Bending Branch Winery
- Friends & Allies’ Springdale Farms Collab. It’s the Springdale White Ale with locally grown aji amarillo and habanero peppers. Collaborator: Springdale Farms
- Hi Sign Hank’s Hard Land American Wheat. The wheat ale was brewed with lemon, ginger and strawberry. Collaborator: Banger’s Sausage House & Beer Garden
- Hops & Grain Common Denominator. The mixed-culture saison was blended with the juice of 50 lbs. of Texas-grown watermelons. Collaborator: Tecolote Farms
- Jester King Foudreweizen. It’s Live Oak Hefeweizen’s wort fermented in a foudre with hefeweizen yeast and Jester King’s mixed culture. Collaborator: Live Oak Brewing
- Lazarus Brewing’s the Gose. The traditional gose was brewed with fresh lemongrass and basil. Collaborator: The Brewer’s Table
- Lone Pint Po-Cha-Na-Quar-Hip. Named after a Native American war chief whose people loved honey, the braggot features Texas wildflower honey. Collaborators: Enchanted Manor Meadery and Rudy’s Honey
- Lorelei Brewing’s the Dude Russian Imperial Coffee Milk Stout. Collaborator: Coffee Waves
- Martin House Brewing Yakima Valley Apple. The beer is a graf, a cider-beer hybrid. Collaborator: Bishop Cider Co.
- New Braunfels Brewing Revolverheld Barrel-Aged Brown Ale. It’s 80 percent comprised of Infamous Brewing’s HiJack Cream Ale, 20 percent New Braunfels’ Uber Weizenbock, barrel-aged and then refermented with cherries. Collaborator: Infamous Brewing
- North by Northwest’s Dr. Rauchenstein, a German-style rauchbier. Collaborator: The Brewtorium Brewery & Kitchen
- Orf Brewing’s Maple-Aged Orftoberfest. The ale was aged with rum-infused maple wood pieces. Collaborator: Drejza Design
- Pinthouse Pizza’s Coffee-Infused Fully Adrift Double IPA. Collaborator: Houndstooth Coffee/ Tweed Coffee Roasters
Real Ale Eclipse, a smoked rye schwarzbier. Collaborator: Doom Side of the Moon (which would be the stoner rock tribute band mentioned earlier)
- Red Horn Horn Puncher Northeast IPA. Collaborator: Pinthouse Pizza
- Saint Arnold Fuzzy Wuzzy Was a Peach Saison. It’s the brewery’s Icon Gold: Texas Honey Saison aged in chardonnay wine barrels for six months with 250 pounds of peaches and honey added later. Collaborators: Burleson’s Honey and Light Sey Farms
- Southern Star Nature of Ego and Self Dark Lager. Collaborator: Vincent Fink, a Houston artist
- St. Elmo Brewing Rain Helles. The lager was made with 100 percent Texas rainwater (the second such beer to be made with it). Collaborator: Richard’s Rainwater
- Texas Beer Co.’s Highway 95 Double RyePA. The rye pale ale is a scaled-up version of a house favorite. Collaborator: Granger City Brewing
TUPPS Brewery Full Grown Hombre Imperial Stout. It’s the brewery’s Full Grown Man with chocolate, vanilla, coffee and ancho chilies. Collaborator: Book Club Cafe
