Bat Fest 2017 is coming. It’s welcoming Creed’s singer with arms wide open.

Would you rather see 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats emerge majestically from under the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge, or hear Creed frontman Scott Stapp tap into the angst of a post-grunge generation? On August 19 (and only on August 19, 2017, we can say with confidence), you won’t have to choose.

Thank the divine intervention of Bat Fest 2017. The annual celebration of Austin’s most famous winged residents (sorry, grackles) returns later this month, promising bats, live music and more. Headlining the Austin360 Stage (hey, that’s us) are Bone Thugz-n-Harmony (preceded by Houston rapper Paul Wall), with Bluewater Highway closing out the Country Stage right here in the Statesman lot. Headlining the Bridge North Stage by Triphound.net at 10 p.m.? That honor goes to Scott Stapp, lead vocalist of Creed, a band whose music is “generally considered to be rock,” according to their Wikipedia page. Lest you find yourself worried that you might show up to Bat Fest seeking the guttural, testosterone-soaked strains of “My Sacrifice” and find only a bittersweet symphony of Stapp solo songs, take one last breath. According to the festival lineup, Stapp will perform the hits of Creed.

Also at Bat Fest: arts and crafts vendors, food, children’s activities and a bat costume contest. The best bat costume (in separate categories for children and adults) will win $100. Originality, according to the fest, is encouraged. Bruce Wayne duds might not cut it.

Bat Fest will run 4 p.m.-midnight. Admission costs have yet to be announced, but it will be cash only. Find more info on the festival’s website.
