For the sixth year, the Driskill Hotel is holding its spinoff on a holiday bake sale, Cookies for Caring, to benefit the Statesman’s Season for Caring program.
In its first five years, the event has raised about $40,000 for the Season for Caring, which helps local families through nonprofit partner agencies such as Meals on Wheels Central Texas, Wonders & Worries, Family Eldercare and Caritas of Austin.
This year because of the coronavirus pandemic, instead of having a big event with 200 people crowded inside a room, the cookies will be packaged up ahead of time and guests can pick up their prepurchased tin in the lobby of the hotel 4-6 p.m. Dec. 17-19.
Inside the tins will be cookies from The Driskill, Hyatt Regency Austin, Hyatt Regency Lost Pines and Miravel Austin. More bakeries could be added.
Each tin comes with two drink tickets for The Driskill Bar.
The tins are $50 and available at driskillhotell.com. People regularly buy the tins for themselves as well as for gifts for friends, neighbors and family members.
This year a Season for Caring family also will be lighting the Driskill tree, in what has become an annual tradition. The virtual tree lighting will happen Dec. 1.
Season for Caring officially launches its 22nd year on Nov. 29 with a dozen new families and their local nonprofit organizations. Since 1999, the program has raised $13.7 million.
