East Austin between Cesar Chavez and Sixth streets has seen an explosion of dining growth in recent years, with some of the city’s top restaurants (Suerte, Pitchfork Pretty) opening in the area. The neighborhood's most recent addition is a more casual affair.
Drop Kick opened today at 1630 E. Sixth St. (at Chalmers Street), beneath the Indie Apartments, serving upscale bar food with myriad global influences like kimchi queso with a pretzel; burrata and roasted carrots with ancho vadouvan vinaigrette; ahi tuna on seaweed tostada with yuzu aioli; cheeseburger with smoked gouda; and braised short rib flautas. The beverage program at Drop Kick is anchored by craft cocktails, beer and wine. Check out the food and beverage menu here.
The kitchen is led by chef Francisco Baca, an El Paso native with a resume that includes time at San Francisco restaurants Namu Gaji, Smokestack, Michael Mina and the Saratoga, where he served as chef de cuisine.
"We wanted to create a place where those searching for classic bar foods could be wowed at the way we simply, and sometimes elaborately, elevate dishes that have everyone coming back for more," Baca said.
One note increasingly of interest to Austinites: Drop Kick eventually plans to offer 20 free parking spots in the attached garage.
