Update: A spokesperson for ABIA says the two Starbucks location should be open by the end of the year or early January at the latest. Starbucks signed a 10-year lease with the airport’s concessionaire partner HMS Host.
The Austin-Bergstrom International Airport likes to keep it pretty weird. At least as far as airports go. The wonderfully efficient airport features almost all local food and beverage brands, from JuiceLand to Tacodeli to Salt Lick BBQ, a mission the airport has followed since opening in 1999. You can stroll through the terminal and feel like you’re walking down one of Austin’s densest retail streets, peeping some of the city’s most popular brands.
That’s not to say everything on offer at the airport is local. You’ll also find Vino Volo wine bar, Mad Greens, and an Einstein’s Bagels and Caribou Coffee joint. And soon the Austin airport will add one of the world’s most recognizable brands. Starbucks will open two locations next year, the first at baggage claim and the second inside checkpoint one near James Avery Artisan Jewelry.
The international chain will join a collection of Austin coffee options that includes Ruta Maya Coffee (Gates 15 and 28), Caffe Medici (Gate 9), Jo’s Coffee (Gate 19), as well as vending services from Austin-based Briggo (Gate 12) and High Brew Coffee (baggage claim).
Man, air travelers sure love themselves some coffee.
A spokesperson for the airport said that the decision to include Starbucks was to ensure a mix of familiar brands for visitors to complement all of the great options Austin has to offer.
The new Starbucks locations will offer counter-service and serve coffee drinks and food.
The Starbucks addition follows the news that Salvation Pizza and 24 Diner will open in the coming weeks at ABIA, and next year the airport will introduce the Austin City Kitchen at the Gate 9 expansion, which will include Sushi-A-Go-Go (from owners of Kome), Noble Sandwich Co., Austin Beerworks, Zocalo Cafe and Hardie’s market.
The ABIA spokesperson said no other national food-and-beverage brands are currently planned for the airport.
