Is there a local craft beer you love so much that you want a nice picture of it on your wall? Austin photographer Julien Fleury is counting on it to raise money for a cause close to his heart.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and for the fourth year running, he is hosting Beers on Pink as a fundraiser for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. At the Saturday event, Fleury's prints showcasing the beers of a dozen local breweries, including Hops & Grain, 4th Tap Brewing Co-op and Pinthouse Pizza, will be on view and auctioned off while attendees drink some of these brews.

Each one of the images is simple and striking: Beer foam spills down the sides of custom goblets and steins — produced by Settle Ceramics especially for Beers on Pink, and also available for purchase — against a vividly pink background.

The pink background, of course, is intentional; that color has become an international symbol of breast cancer awareness.

"My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer many years ago and I was trying to find ways I could help support breast cancer awareness with my skills as a food and beverage photographer," Fleury said in an email. "So I just started playing with beer images on a pink background and it slowly evolved into the actual event we have now."

Each brewery gets to pick the beer they want to represent them in the show, he said. Many of them have gone with seasonals currently in their lineup, such as Celis' Grand Cru and Circle's Tuxedo T-Shirt Black IPA. The fun part for Fleury? That he actually acquires each one to photograph (and then, presumably, gets to drink them once he's done).

During the Beers on Pink photo shoot — held about a month before the fundraiser — Fleury has two particular challenges to keep in mind: that the beer is visible in the head-on shot and that the pink background doesn't completely overwhelm.

They both have an easy, if messy, fix: Fleury likes to have the beer overflow in its respective glassware. White foam from the Pearl-Snap Pilsner breaches the top of the Austin Beerworks' stein in one image. In another, tan-colored suds from Infamous' Rum Barrel-Aged Pumpkin Massacre ooze down the back and sides of the branded goblet, giving it what looks like a little, foamy mullet.

"The process can be challenging because pink is a very overwhelming color," he said. "So I counter that often with the use of motion in the foam, especially this year and last since we have the custom goblets/steins from Settle Ceramics."

During the Beers on Pink fundraiser from 7 to 11 p.m. on Oct. 19, you'll be able to participate in the auction of the prints and glassware with a $10 suggested donation at the door. The event will be held at J-Squared Studios, at 1023 Springdale Rd., Bldg. 2, Ste. B., and will have complimentary Austin beers provided. All of the proceeds go toward the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
