Austin360 On The Record is a weekly roundup of new, recent and upcoming releases by local and Austin-associated recording artists.

OUT THIS WEEK

Susan Gibson, “The Hard Stuff.” Following the 2016 EP “Remember Who You Are” but her first full-length release since 2011’s ‘Tight Rope,” this 10-song set extends an exemplary career that dates back to the Wimberley singer-songwriter’s late-1990s breakthrough when the Dixie Chicks topped the charts with her tune “Wide Open Spaces.” Even two decades down the road, it’s easy to hear what drew the Dixie Chicks to Gibson’s music in the first place on these new songs. Her exquisitely well-crafted songs got pristine production from Belle Sounds co-leader Andre Moran at Mark Hallman’s Congress House studios in South Austin. “Imaginary Lines,” co-written with Jana Pochop, opens the record with a cinematic scope both sonically and lyrically. Mid-album standouts include the acoustic unlucky-in-love ballad “Diagnostic Heart” and “2 Fake IDs,” a story from her Texas Panhandle youth involving Lubbock’s Avenue Q, a place altogether different from the one in the Broadway musical. “8x10,” a beautifully bittersweet bluegrassy tribute to Gibson’s departed mother, is a picture-perfect album closer. Release show Oct. 5 at Saxon Pub. Here’s the title track:

Chris King, “Lone Rats” (Classic). A follow-up to his 2016 album “Animal,” King recorded these eight originals plus a Scott Davis song primarily at Uptown Modern furniture shop in North Austin, adding atmospheric bits of synth, keys, bass and other accents at home.
