It was a relatively quiet year for Austin on the Bon Appetit list of the best new restaurants in America. The list, which can be considered a finalists list before the top 10 comes out in a few weeks, includes Carpenters Hall at the boutique Carpenter Hotel. The all-day restaurant is helmed by executive chef Grae Nonas, previously of Olamaie.
The list of 50 does not offer long descriptions of each restaurant, saving that for the eventual winners, but the entry for Carpenters Hall states the following: "The plate-size cutlet says it all at this way-more-than-a hotel restaurant. [Ed note: Andrew Knowlton, BA's editor-at-large, is involved in the restaurant]."
Knowlton, who spearheaded this list for years before this year ceding that duty to Julia Kramer, is a partner in the company that owns the hotel and oversees the food and beverage programs at the property, according to a recent release from the hotel. Knowlton's involvement in the restaurant and its place on the list inspired some dismay and frustration from the food journalism community, as reported by the Washington Post, but both the publication and Knowlton dismiss any conflict of interest or favoritism.
Other Texas entries on this year's list include Blood Bros. BBQ in Houston and Khao Noodle Shop and Petra and the Beast in Dallas.
