The latest release from Austin’s world class cumbia ensemble, Grupo Fantasma, is an ambitious platter that covers everything from everything from Turkish psychedelia to Tex-Mex. Grupo Fantasma is currently on tour in Siberia, but staff writers Deborah Sengupta Stith and Nancy Flores caught up with Greg Gonzalez and Beto Martinez from the band earlier this year to talk about growing up on the border, the band’s recent trip to Colombia and why they named the new collection“American Music Vol. VII.”
