The Pan Am Hillside Concert Series celebrated 60 years of free family-friendly concerts in Pan American Neighborhood Park last year. The longest-running outdoor concert series in the city returns to the park's hillside amphitheater this summer for four Tuesdays in July. As always, the series presents a roster of artists who represent the traditional sounds of the East Austin neighborhood. The series kicks off July 2 with a concert featuring Tejano vocalist David Marez, lead singer of the early Chicano soul outfit the Royal Jesters. Marez' Tejano classics include "Yo Soy Chicano," "Entre Mas Lejos Me Vaya" and "Fijate."
The final installment of the series, on July 23, is headlined by Grammy-winning Tejano artist Ruben Ramos a.k.a. El Gato Negro.
Concert-goers are welcome to bring blankets, lawn chairs and canned beverages, but leave the radios and glass containers at home. The concerts begin at 7 p.m. each Tuesday and are free and open to all. More information.
