Austin360 On The Record is a weekly roundup of new, recent and upcoming releases by local and Austin-associated recording artists.
OUT THIS WEEK
Shy Beast, “Shy ’Til You Die.” Rechristened as Shy Beast in 2017 after initially performing as MCG (short-form for singer-keyboardist Mariclaire Glaeser), Shy Beast has gradually become one of Austin’s best indie-pop acts. The seven tracks on this vinyl-only release comprise material previously released digitally and on EPs; collectively, they’re an impressive resume of the band’s work up to this point. A dynamic singer and performer, Glaeser also has a sharp sense for pop hooks that are fleshed out brightly and cleanly by guitarist/keyboardist Andrew Bennett, guitarist David Tenczar, bassist Jay Cesak and drummer Drew Silverman. The LP’s finale, “Flowers Grow,” is the band’s best track yet, setting up what could well be a bright future for Shy Beast. In-store May 30 at Waterloo Records, release shows June 1 at Antone’s and June 12 at Native Hostel. Here’s the video for the track “My Stride”:
Christelle Bofale, “Swim Team” EP. From Austin by way of San Antonio, Bofale is the first American-born member of her native Congolese family. On this five-song debut EP, the 22-year-old singer-songwriter draws from an intriguing range of genres, blending pop, soul and jazz with world music and indie-folk to create a sound that’s very much her own. Most impressive here is “U Ouchea,” a seven-minute wandering journey strung along a rich guitar-based musical reverie. In-store June 3 at Waterloo Records, playing May 31 at Mohawk indoor and June 4 at Cheer Up Charlie’s. Here’s the video for the track “Origami Dreams”:
Michael Bain, “Tidal Ways.” A guitarist in local indie band Sun June, Bain steps out on his own with a nine-song set of melodic pop that goes more for mood and feel than showy bombast. Despite being ornately arranged, it’s almost a true solo album, as Bain plays everything from guitar and bass to keys, synths and drums (with Will Patterson adding bass and drums on a few tracks). Release show May 31 at Hole in the Wall, in-store June 24 at Waterloo Records. Here’s the title track:
