Here's what's happening in the Live Music Capital of the World this week.

OUR TOP PICKS

Friday: American Sharks record release at Mohawk outdoor. “11:11,” the new album from Austin’s standout stoner-rock trio, blazes in on a mean-spirited guitar riff that explodes into a furious cacophony of punishing rhythm and muscular distortion. It sets the tone for an album that cuts heavy fuzz and brutal power chords with wry humor — a head-banging, teeth-rattling collection that refuses to take itself too seriously. The band has been steadily touring for the past few years, building a following around the country, and this is a solid opportunity to catch them at home before they embark on their next journey. Kyle Schutt of the Sword and Drakulas are also on the bill. $15-$18. 8 p.m. 912 Red River St. mohawkaustin.com. — D.S.S.

Friday-Saturday: KVRX Fest at Cheer Up Charlie’s and Symphony Square. Long before anyone used the term “tastemaker,” college radio DJs functioned as authorities on America’s best underground sounds. Even in the post-internet era, these young enthusiasts keep a finger on the pulse of indie music’s next big thing. The inaugural event programmed by UT’s student radio station features 40 bands on three stages over two days. Featured national artists include lo-fi pop act Frankie Cosmos, art rockers Palm, dark-wave band Drab Majesty and Houston rapper Fat Tony. A diverse selection of Austin artists including Abhi the Nomad, TC Superstar, Xetas and Vonne will also perform. $40 two-day pass. Music starts at 5:30 p.m. Friday, 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Symphony Square: 1111 Red River St.; Cheer Up Charlie’s: 900 Red River St. Check kvrxfest.org for the schedule. — D.S.S.

(UPDATE: This show has been postponed until June 2.) Sunday: Strings in the Park with Kevin Russell at Central Market North. The longtime leader of local string-music collective Strings Attached, violinist Will Taylor welcomes Shinyribs leader Kevin Russell as his special guest for this free afternoon show “celebrating Austin's environmental awareness, natural beauty, musicians and companies who care.” It’s the second year for this event co-sponsored by H-E-B and Biointegrity, a local organization addressing global environmental issues. 3 p.m. 4101 N. Lamar Blvd. stringsinthepark.com. — P.B.

Sunday: Combo Chimbita at Barracuda. Driven by the powerful vocals of one-time heavy metal singer Carolina Oliveros, the band of Colombian expats living in New York City layers ambient electronics and psychedelic fuzz over cumbia-based rhythms. They describe their sound as tropical futurism, but Oliveros calls on ancestral spirits to bless their mesmerizing melodies, giving their music an earthy power that feels timeless. $12-$14. 7 p.m. doors. 611 E. 7th St. barracudaaustin.com — D.S.S.

Monday: Blue Monday Live with the Bluebonnets and Jackie Venson at Juliet Italian Kitchen. As a complement to the station's weekly Texas Radio Live show on Wednesdays at Guero's, Sun Radio presents this more occasional series to tie in with its long-running Blue Monday on-air program. The talent is hot for this one, with our 2018 Austin360 Artist of the Year Jackie Venson plus blues-rockin' female quartet the Bluebonnets with twin-engine guitarists Kathy Valentine and Eve Monsees. Music runs from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.; donations to the Sun Radio Foundation accepted at the door. 1500 Barton Springs Road. sunradio.com. — P.B.

Tuesday: Deer Tick, Courtney Marie Andrews at Scoot Inn. John McCauley’s rough-and-tumble indie-Americana outfit from Rhode Island has weathered rises and falls over a 15-year run, but 2017’s two-volume self-titled set and this year’s odds-&-sods collection “Mayonnaise” have suggested some stability of late. Still, we’re probably even more motivated by the presence on this bill of Andrews, whose 2018 record “May Your Kindness Remain” was one of last year’s best singer-songwriter albums. Her recent performances during South by Southwest, including one on the big outdoor stage at Auditorium Shores, proved she’s just as compelling live. $23-$25. 6 p.m. doors. 1308 E. 4th St. scootinnaustin.com. — P.B.

Thursday: Todd Snider at Paramount Theatre. Championed early on by Kent Finlay (who died in 2015) at San Marcos hangout Cheatham Street Warehouse, witty troubadour Snider went national in the early 1990s and more recently has focused largely on his Americana all-star outfit, Hard Working Americans. This tour focuses on his new album, “Cash Cabin Sessions, Vol. 3”; typical of Snider’s offbeat humor, there’s no Vol. 1 or 2. But the songs, largely performed solo and acoustic, are as sharp as ever and include nods to two heroes with “The Ghost of Johnny Cash” and “Cowboy Jack Clement’s Waltz.” Elizabeth Cook opens. $25-$35. 8 p.m. 713 Congress Ave. austintheatre.org. — P.B.
