"The Ballad of Klook and Vinette." Zach Theatre takes on a contemporary love story with a tender, funny heart that will grab you from the inside out. Klook and Vinette are two lost souls trying to find themselves in one another. Against all odds and with the past at their heels, together they make a tentative stab at happiness. This moving musical features lyrical prose, blues, jazz and soul. 7:30 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday, 2:30 p.m. Sunday, with occasional 2:30 pm. Saturday matinee, through May 26. $30-$78. 202 S. Lamar Blvd. 512-476-0541, zachtheatre.org.

“Last: An Extinction Comedy.” The Vortex has reached the final week of an extraordinary new play that blends improvisation, sketch comedy and environmental activism in the hopes of highlighting the urgency of climate change. In “Last,” taking place centuries from now, a troupe of tired and hungry comedians roam the crumbling remains of human civilization performing dark sketches about extinction. Think of this gallows comedy as “Mad Max” meets the Muppets. 8 p.m. April 24-27. $15-$35. 2307 Manor Road. 512-478-5282, vortexrep.org.
