We're about to find out how IPA-level hops taste with CBD oil in an Austin brew.
Cannabidiol, the pot derivative that has become popular as a mainstream cure-all, is being infused in a perfectly named beer — the Dank Sinatra, a hazy IPA — at North by Northwest on the one day a year dedicated to celebrating cannabis culture. On April 20 (or 4/20, as you might know it), NXNW head brewer Kevin Roark plans to tap the super-limited cask of the CBD-infused beer at 4:20 p.m.
He and the brewing team at NXNW added watermelon-flavored CBD oil and watermelon juice to a cask of the Dank Sinatra, a previously produced and already popular IPA, and your glass of it will come garnished with a watermelon Sour Patch Kid. (You can watch video of the infusion taking place on the event's Facebook page.)
Take note: There are only five gallons of the beer.
"In addition to the CBD-infused cask (for the pot heads), there will be a second cask of Dank Sinatra brewed with Galaxy and Columbus cryo hops (for the hop heads)," according to a news release. You can pick of cans of the Dank Sinatra (sans CBD, for better or worse) starting at 4 p.m.
During that afternoon, NXNW will also serve stoner-approved snacks such as house-made pizza rolls and candy bar brownies.
The watermelon CBD oil infused in the Dank Sinatra cask was provided by SunUp CBD. The Austin-based brand will have a booth from 4 to 7 p.m. to allow you to sample its range of organically grown CBD oils. Want to purchase some of the oils? There will be a discount if you do.
Texas has recently seen a boom of businesses selling products that contain CBD — a nonpsychoactive component of marijuana and hemp that doesn’t produce a high, unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the component of the marijuana plant that is psychoactive. (CBD products fall into a legal gray zone in the state, with officials and advocates disagreeing on whether or not their sale is lawful.)
NXNW is likely not going to be the only Austin brewery tapping into the CBD craze during 4/20 this year. Farther south, Independence Brewing appears to be planning the release of a CBD IPA as well during the brewery's Pipes 'n' Pints event.
Hops and CBD both derive from plants of the Cannabaceae family. Let's hope, flavor-wise, that they're a match made in heaven.
The brewpub is located at 10010 N. Loop 360 (Capital of Texas Highway). For more information, visit nxnwbrew.com.
