Austin has produced another extremely promising opera singer, Elena Villalón, who on Sunday was named among five winners of the 2019 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. The honor comes with a $15,000 cash prize.

Soprano Villalón, 21, attended McCallum High School and was the youngest among the competition's finalists. The Grand Finals took place on the enormous Metropolitan Opera House stage in New York's Lincoln Center with its 3,800-seat house.

That's some leap from McCallum's admirable MacTheatre!

She will join Houston Grand Opera’s studio artist program during the 2019-2020 season and has been a vocal fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center and Houston Grand Opera’s Young Vocal Artist Academy.

She’s already lined up performances in Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus” at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and in Mozart’s “Le Nozze de Figaro” at Opera Theatre of St. Louis. She also has performed in Menotti’s “The Telephone” and Britten’s “Albert Herring."

We look forward to interviewing Villalón the next time she’s in her hometown.
