There's a new kombucha in town, but it has a familiar name.

Greenbelt Kombucha — a nod to the many greenbelts that run through Austin — hit H-E-B shelves last week in four flavors: Peach Blossom White Tea, Blood Orange Yerba Mate, Strawberry Fields Rooibos Tea and Hibiscus Berry Black Tea.

You'll notice that the kombuchas are made out of several different teas, such as yerba mate and rooibos. Most kombucha is made with black tea and, depending on the brand, a variety of added sugars and fruit juices.

Founders Adam Blumenshein, Tim Klatt, Nathan Klatt and Rick Boucard of Barrel Creek Provisions and Texas Sake Company and Gavin Booth of Couple in the Kitchen wanted to make a line of fermented teas that were sold in cans and made without quite as much sugar or lactic acid as what's currently on the market, which creates less of a vinegar-y taste. The 12-ounce drinks have no added fruit juice and have about 40 calories each. The company also touts its use of wind energy to brew the booch.

The cans cost about $2 each and are found in the refrigerated section of more than 130 H-E-B stores, as well as some neighborhood markets, such as Quickie Pickie and the Four Five.
