If you know anyone who has a Big Green Egg, you know popular these ceramic smokers are.

There are entire cookbooks dedicated to cooking on the Big Green Egg — and plenty of knock-offs imitating this grill/smoker hybrid that first launched in the 1970s — and at the end of April, the largest gathering of "egg heads" in Texas will take place at the 17th annual Texas EggFest, a cook-off that includes live music from Bo Luna Music, Brent Wood and Dalton Gray, cooking classes and a grand tasting.

More than 1,000 Big Green Egg fans will gather from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 27 at The Historic Camp Ben McCulloch, 18301 RM 1826 in Driftwood. The event is presented by the Austin-based BBQ Outfitters, which also has a location in San Antonio, and will raise money for the Central Texas Food Bank. Last year, the event raised $10,000 for the food bank.

About 30 teams will be competing in the cook-off, and there will also be barbecue-themed vendors selling Big Green Egg accessories and tools and beer from Twisted X Brewing Company. Tickets cost $50 for adults and $15 for youth ages 12 to 20. Kids under 11 are free.
