Every Austin business owner has stories from the jobs they did before they own their current establishment, but few of those stories are as memorable as Carol Huntsberger's.
For more than 15 years, Huntsberger has owned Quality Seafood Market, the legendary fish market that has been around for more than 80 years. But taking the helm of a well-established Austin seafood company wasn't what Huntsberger had in mind when she was a top sales associate for Mary Kay earlier in her career. She sold cosmetics with her affable charm and determined business sensibilities, and she even had one of those famous pink Cadillacs.
On this week's "I Love You So Much: The Austin360 Podcast," Huntsberger tells the story of how she decided to park the Mary Kay career and transition to learning everything you need to know about fish to sell it to local restaurants, diners and home cooks. Since taking ownership of the company, Huntsberger has developed close relationships with the people who run the fish and shrimp fleets on the Gulf Coast — and beyond — and she's expanded the restaurant to include an oyster bar and even more seating. In the podcast, she talks about the evolution of the restaurant and the rapid changes along Airport Boulevard, which Quality Seafood has called home since the 1970s.
Also in this week's episode, hosts Addie Broyles and Alyssa Vidales catch up about some of the other powerful women they encountered during this year's South by Southwest and share audio clips with sometimes-Austinite Zooey Deschanel, "Top Chef" host Padma Lakshmi, WWE chief brand officer Stephanie McMahon and cookbook author Anita Lo.
