As South by Southwest was winding down, we walked down Red River Street, Sixth Street and the East Side to see what people were up to on their last night.
Austin locals Jesse Wright, Addison Juarez, Jason Han, RJ Ponceja, Tiffany Wang and Shivani Ranganathan are spending Saturday bouncing from venue to venue. They were most excited to head to Auditorium Shores where William Tyler, Courtney Marie Andrews, Andrew Bird, and Patty Griffin were performing.
All the way from Indianapolis, Julian Green’s favorite act of the week so far has been Rico Nasty. “I’ve seen her a bunch of times this week,” he said. For his last day, he’s feeling serendipitous. “I’m hoping I just find something cool.”
While hanging on Red River Street, Ashlynn Gonzalez and Deja Robinson were looking for their next act. Their favorite acts this week were rapper Tierra Whack and Virgil Abhol, who performed Friday night at the Uber Eats House. What are they excited for on their last night? “We’re pumped for Billie Eilish!” Gonzalez said.
Waiting on the side entrance of Stubb’s for his chance to take a photo of Bleachers — his favorite act of the week, “by far” — Robert Montalvo from San Antonio has been exploring SXSW since it started last week. He’s seen Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine, Big Boi, Surfbort and many others.
With a film badge around her neck, University of Texas student Yohana Franco has been volunteering for the week at SXSW. Her favorite person of the week was ipsy creator Gabriel Zamora, who held a pop-up on Red River. She highly recommends watching the film “Stuber,” about an Uber driver who unwittingly picks up a cop on the hunt for a killer.
Karina Mata’s favorite part of SXSW was the K-pop showcase at Austin City Limits earlier in the week. “I loved watching Ikon,” she said. With just a few hours left in the day, she’s most excited for singer Billie Eilish, who’s performing at Uber Eats House.
Greg Sells has been volunteering for SXSW since 1987—the very first year. “It was a lot smaller in those days,” he said. He’s been having a good time discovering new artists but he’s most excited for Patty Griffin.
