If you've ever wanted to take a photo with a Texas longhorn and drink cowboy coffee, Friday is your chance.
Every year ahead of Rodeo Austin, which this year starts on March 16, the organization hosts a free Cowboy Breakfast at the Long Center, 701 W. Riverside Drive, to kick off the rodeo's annual BBQ Austin competition at the Travis County Expo Center.
This year's Cowboy Breakfast will take place from 6 to 8 a.m. on Friday, which is also Rodeo Austin's designated "Dress Western Day."
Friday is also the first day of South by Southwest, so don't be surprised to see cowboy boots at the convention center and badges at the Long Center.
The free breakfast items include breakfast tacos, smoked sausage wraps, cowboy coffee, Krispy Kreme doughnuts, chuck wagon biscuits and gravy, as well as "catfish toes," which are like chicken fingers but made with fish. The event will also feature live music from Lohman’s Crossing and two-stepping instruction by the Austin Academy of Music and Dance.
On Saturday and Sunday, BBQ Austin will bring together more than 100 cook-off teams competing for the title of “BBQ Austin Grand Champion.” Admission to the fairgrounds is $8, and attendees will be able to try a variety of free samples from competing teams. You can buy tickets to this weekend's cook-off or the upcoming rodeo at RodeoAustin.com.
