OUR TOP PICKS
Multiple-night runs: Hayes Carll, David Ramirez and Dale Watson. Once in a blue moon, high-profile local acts stack up several shows in a row for special occasions, but it seems to be an epidemic this month. Hot on the heels of last weekend’s three-night “Shakey Graves Day” run at Cactus Cafe and the Parish comes a similar rush from three Austin singer-songwriters mining distinctly different veins of roots music.
First up is honky-tonker Dale Watson, who celebrates his new album “Call Me Lucky” with five straight shows in the area, including three in Austin. After teeing off with shows Thursday, Feb. 14, at Gruene Hall (8 p.m., $10) and Friday at the Hill Country's legendary Luckenbach Dancehall (8 p.m., $20-$45), Watson plays Saturday at the Broken Spoke (9 p.m., $10-$15) and Monday in his usual Continental Club slot (10 p.m., $7). For a guy who moved part-time to Memphis a year or so ago, Watson still sure finds time to get in a lot of Austin gigs.
Also sporting a new album is Americana standout Hayes Carll, who follows Friday’s Dualtone Records release of “What It Is” with a five-pronged blitz of Austin gigs. Catch him Wednesday at Saxon Pub (8:30 p.m., $20-$30); Thursday at Waterloo Records for a free 5 p.m. in-store set followed by a late show at the Continental Club (10 p.m., $25-$28); Friday, Feb. 22, at 3Ten (8:30 p.m., sold out); and Saturday, Feb. 23, at Antone’s (9 p.m., $25). Ben Dickey — star of last year’s Blaze Foley biopic “Blaze” and awaiting the early-March release of his own new record, “A Glimmer on the Outskirts" — opens the Continental, 3Ten and Antone’s shows.
Finally, indie sensation David Ramirez doesn’t have a new record out, but he’s revisiting his entire catalog in a four-night stand at Cactus Cafe beginning Wednesday and ending Saturday, Feb. 23 (8:30 p.m., $20-$25). Night one will include “American Soil” plus the “Strangetown” EP; night two is “Apologies” plus “The Rooster” EP; night three is “Fables”; and night four is “We’re Not Going Anywhere.” Each show features a different opener: Carson McHone on Wednesday, Thomas Csorba on Thursday, Matt McCloskey on Friday and Jason Robert Blum on Saturday. The run helps the Cactus launch a series of special events for its 40th anniversary. — P.B.
Friday: Emily Wolfe album release at Mohawk outdoor. The long-awaited, full-length debut from ace ax-slinger Emily Wolfe is a raucous rumble, rich with muscular riffs and soaring solos aplenty. Wolfe’s incongruously silky vocals glide on top, adding melodic clarity and singalong hooks to the furious distortion that drives the album. Excellent Houston indie pop outfit Wild Moccasins and local standouts Think No Think will also perform. $12-$15. 8 p.m. doors. 912 Red River St. mohawkaustin.com. — D.S.S.
Saturday: Clear Soul Forces, Noveliss at Flamingo Cantina. Kick it old-school style. The four-man hip-hop crew from Detroit spits real knowledge over soulful production reminiscent of your golden-era faves. Grouchy old hip-hop heads take heart — this is new music steeped in a deep respect for the culture, and there’s not a mumble rapper in the bunch. Openers include the local powerhouse Mindz of a Different Kind and a rare live performance from pizza don D.O.S., who’s spent the last few years building his catering business, Da Slice. $10. 9 p.m. 515 E. Sixth St. flamingocantina.com. — D.S.S.
Sunday: Fleetwood Mac tribute at Cosmic. On the heels of the classic band’s performance at the Erwin Center last weekend, Austin musician Lonnie Trevino has gathered a posse of his fellow locals to perform both hits and deep cuts from the band’s catalog. Participants include Akina Adderley, Jane Ellen Bryant, Wendy Colonna, Suzanna Choffel, Johnny Goudie, Charlie Faye, Noelle Hampton, Barbara Nesbitt, Phil Hurley and many more. Free. 8 p.m. 121 Pickle Road. cosmiccoffeebeer.com. — P.B.
Thursday: Jane Claire at North Door. Though she’s best known locally as the leader of Boss Babes ATX, an innovative collective dedicated to championing gender equality, music has been Jane Claire Hervey’s primary pursuit for much of her life. Her new EP, “Sour Grapefruit,” weaves incisive lyricism and sultry vocals in a heady collection of downtempo daydreams. DJ Kay Cali, P1nkstar, Y2K (uno wane) and Kinder and Friends also perform. $5-$10. 8 p.m. 501 Brushy St. ndvenue.com. — D.S.S.
Thursday: Arlo Guthrie, Sara Lee Guthrie at Paramount Theatre. When you follow up your massive hit song with a funky independent movie of the same name, as Arlo Guthrie did with “Alice’s Restaurant” in 1968 and 1969, it means you can celebrate the golden anniversary of both works 50 years later. Thus the “Alice’s Restaurant: Back by Popular Demand” Tour brings the show to Austin, with a backing crew that includes his daughter Sarah Lee Guthrie, an accomplished recording artist in her own right. Sarah Lee also will open the show. $20-$68. 8 p.m. 713 Congress Ave. austintheatre.org. — P.B.
