Black-eyed peas are a New Year's Day staple in many homes, but William Chris Vineyards in Hye decided to make this ritual an annual event at the winery.
The winery's black-eyed pea cook-off returns at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 1, at the vineyard, which is on the U.S. 290 wine trail between Johnson City and Fredericksburg.
Tickets for general admission cost $25 and include a glass of bubbly, black-eyed peas and live music. Attendees can also sign up to compete in an eating competition, which you can sign up for on the day of the event. You can buy tickets at williamchriswines.com.
If you want to compete in the cook-off, you'll have to make enough black-eyed peas for at least 100 samples and arrive by noon to set up. The entry fee is $50 and includes an apron and a shot at winning the $500 grand prize.
