OUR TOP PICKS
Friday: Butch Hancock & Turk Pipkin at Stateside at the Paramount. Subtitled “On Their Own: A West Texas Musical and Literary Sideshow,” this reprisal of a pairing the two longtime friends first presented at the old Capitol City Playhouse in the 1980s will feature music, storytelling, perhaps juggling, “deeds of visual and verbal daring,” and perhaps more. One of the greatest living Texas songwriters, Hancock also has had museum exhibits of his photos and drawings. Pipkin’s resume includes writing novels, acting in shows such as HBO’s “The Leftovers” and running the philanthropic Nobelity Project nonprofit. Whatever they cook up together, it’ll be entertaining. $25-$75. 7:30 p.m. 719 Congress Ave. austintheatre.org. — P.B.
Friday: Alesia Lani at Stubb’s indoor. Over the past few years, Austin outfit KeyzStreet Music, helmed by keyboard maestro Jonathan E. Deas, has been grinding hard to raise the profile of R&B music in Austin. This show features three artists from the label's roster. Headliner Alesia Lani is coming off a huge year that included a Best R&B Artist shout out in the Austin Music Awards and a prestigious recording grant. Steamy singer, Jake Lloyd and DJ Kay Cali also perform. $10. 9 p.m. doors. 801 Red River St. stubbsaustin.com — D.S.S.
Saturday: "Threadgill's Last Rodeo" with Shinyribs and more at Threadgill’s South. Rumors of the storied restaurant/venue’s demise have often been exaggerated, exacerbated, reconstituted and recalculated, but it looks like it’s for real this time. Kevin Russell’s mighty mighty Shinyribs will play the final show in the beer garden on Saturday night, following an afternoon bash that will include peformances by Fastball, Cotton Mather, Van Wilks, Monte Warden, Sarah Sharp, Guy Forsyth and Michael Fracasso. On Sunday, Jon Emery will play the 11 a.m. gospel brunch as Threadgill’s South serves up its final chicken-fried steaks, meatloaves and more. An on-site auction of memorabilia is set for Dec. 8. And remember, the original north location will remain open; they have live music regularly there as well. Tickets for Shinyribs are $20; the show starts at 7:30 p.m., with a separate $20 charge for the afternoon show which begins at noon. 301 W. Riverside Drive. threadgills.com. — P.B.
Saturday: Ramblin’ Jack Elliott at Cactus Cafe. Sure, it’s cool that Willie Nelson taped “Austin City Limits” last week at age 85 — but don’t forget Ramblin’ Jack, who’s still on the road at 87. A living link to Woody Guthrie, a Grammy-winning folk troubadour and the subject of a fascinating documentary made by his daughter, Elliott is an artist who shouldn’t be missed if you’ve never seen him. $30-$35. 8:30 p.m. 2237 Guadalupe St. cactuscafe.org. — P.B.
Sunday: Snoop Dogg at Dell Diamond. If you missed the Doggfather when he was in San Marcos for Float Fest earlier this year, here’s another chance to catch the West Coast OG before the year is up. Snoop is playing a run of ballpark shows that includes a Round Rock stop. This go-round he’s bringing with him a who’s who of artists from your ’90s hip-hop playlist including Too Short, Warren G and Bone Thugs ‘n’ Harmony. $45-$89. 7 p.m. 3400 E Palm Valley Blvd., Round Rock. roundrockexpress.com — D.S.S.
Monday: Jorja Smith, Ravyn Lenae at Mohawk outdoor. British soul artist Smith simmers as her honeyed tones slide over brooding grooves that owe as much to New Jack Swing as modern R&B. By the time her debut album, “Lost & Found,” dropped this year, she already had a Drake collab and an appearance on the Kendrick Lamar-produced “Black Panther” soundtrack under her belt, setting her up to be one of the year’s biggest breakout new artists. Sold out. 7 p.m. doors. 912 Red River St. mohawkaustin.com. — D.S.S.
Wednesday: Texas Radio Live with Sydney Wright and Walker Lukens at Guero’s. An indie-pop singer-songwriter who creates keyboard-loop soundscapes to support her striking lead vocals, Wright created an arresting and ambitious album with “Seiche,” released earlier this month. She shares the latest episode of Sun Radio’s weekly series with Lukens, who released his second full-length album, “Tell It to the Judge,” last year. Donations accepted. 6 p.m. 1412 S. Congress Ave. sunradio.com/trl. — P.B.
Thursday: Jackson Browne Tribute at Saxon Pub. Though it was a strange hodge-podge of live recordings, new material and covers, “Running on Empty” ended up being Jackson Browne’s best-selling album, passing 7 million in the U.S. alone. A smorgasbord of locals will take everyone back to 1977 at the Saxon, including Rosie Flores, Guy Forsyth, Jaimee Harris, Mark Hallman, Charlie Faye, William Harries Graham, Barbara Nesbitt, Lonnie Trevino Jr. and more. $20-25. 10 p.m. 1320 S. Lamar Blvd. thesaxonpub.com. — P.B.
